Secure PNT Services as Key Factor for Autonomous Mobility

ITS Congress Sevilla 2025: Secure PNT Services as Key Factor for Autonomous Mobility

At the 16th Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) European Congress in Seville, the focus was on one thing in particular: safe and reliable positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) - a key topic for all applications in the field of connected and autonomous mobility.

Maximilian Möbes, Chief Engineer at DiMOS Operations GmbH, took part as a panellist in the session ‘Addressing PNT Challenges for CCAM through ESA NAVISP Programme’ organised by the European Space Agency (ESA) and discussed current challenges, innovations and solutions in the field of PNT together with experts from all over Europe.

Why PNT is so critical at the moment

The increase in jamming and spoofing attacks on GNSS signals significantly increases the risk for autonomous and safety-critical systems. The ability to localise oneself precisely and reliably is a basic requirement for automated driving, drone operations and many other CCAM (Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility) applications.

The panel emphasised that not only the development of new and robust systems, for example LEO-PNT (low-earth orbit systems are crucial, but also the redundancy of existing infrastructures such as Galileo. This is the only way to ensure that autonomous systems can operate safely even in corrupted or challenging environments.

ESA NAVISP: innovation driver for safe navigation

With its NAVISP programme, ESA specifically supports projects that develop, test and validate new PNT technologies. These include
- Hardware tests under real interference conditions
- Optimisation of existing GNSS systems
- Integration of LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites for PNT purposes
The use of LEO-PNT in particular is regarded as a promising technology for the future. Due to lower orbits, these signals are fundamentally more robust against interference and can therefore play an important role in the safety of autonomous vehicles.

We bring space travel to the road - safely!

Our expertise in space technologies enables us here at DiMOS to set standards for autonomous mobility - with solutions that not only enable precise navigation, but can also be safely and efficiently integrated into existing infrastructures.

As Maximilian Möbes emphasised during the panel:
‘We are bringing space tech to the road - safely.’
